WACKO OF THE WEEK, 03/17/07

PROF. JOHN D. MCCALLIE (half of a great love story)

When she was a coach at Auburn University, they met and married. He was a professor. Now she is a coach at Michigan State, and surprisingly, his qualifications just matched a job in the econ department there, so he was coincidentally hired.

She is Joanne McCallie, a basketball heroine. He can slam dunk a trash basket, with or without balls.

Now, he faces criminal charges for biting a cop. (This is called man-to-man coverage). Let's hope this is not something he learned from his wife, who is now coaching the best Women's Basketball team in the nation. Even in the rules of modern basketball, biting is discouraged.

She describes him, profoundly, thus: "He's kind of an interesting guy. He's done a lot of different things in his life ..." SOURCE OF TESTIMONIAL, and she adds that he loves MSU.

He is the greatest professor I ever had - no comparison.

MPH: I don't know you, but I think you're a prince of a guy to defend him.

This causes me to add a footnote to this post about Prof. McCallie. I kind of admire this man. I have been in similar snarls, although never violent, with airline travel, which I consider one of the worst industries in America. (I could write an essay, and maybe I will.) I imagine that Mr McCallie reached a breaking point and I don't blame him.

However, one of my dearest friends is a Spartan and he likes to know when his University makes the news. :) So I offered this sample for his enjoyment.

Thanks, MPH, for your participation.

As an infrequent visitor, I missed this posting on the Arboretum until Old Chip brought it to my attention.

A few responses: I don't know why he qualifies for "Wacko of the Week" - after all they'd lost HIS GOLF CLUBS! That deserves at least a bite. This incident happened on March 7 and was chewed up and spit out on Spartan message boards and sports talk shows for several days. Spartan sports fans being what they are, attention wasn't directed so much at John McAllie as much as "What was Joann doing in Florida - looking for a new job!!"

The Red Cedar Message Board had some interesting postings about McAllie's comments in his classes when school resumed after spring break - although they may be deleted by now.

Finally, there's a lesson for UM fans here, too. Beware of hiring husband and wife teams - one may become a liability while the other remains a valuable asset. (Mr. and Mrs. Amaker??)

SAtrange that the incident should ha[ppen on march 7, as Sparty says, but not appear in the Spartan newspaper until Mar 12.

Hmm..........

Coach McCallie is a great coach and this was an unfortunate distraction during her most intense month of the year. But I have to vouch for Professor John McCallie, who remains to this day, the single greatest professor I ever had the pleasure of learning from. When he was teaching at the University of Maine, there was no professor more well liked by the top economics students. There was no professor who engaged the mind and challenged us with fresh ideas as often and readily as Prof. McCallie. I am extremely lucky that I happened into his introductory micro course my second semester, young, confused, and unaware of so many things. Prof. McCallie taught me how to think - and I believe he knows that I am forever grateful.

It is very painful for me to read the press accounts of what supposedly happened. I can’t even imagine for the life of me how such a chain of events could unfold and I look forward to seeing another side of the story soon.

Yeah, I'd like to hear another side of the story, too: The testimony of the students who have been bitten by McCallie in the past. Let's have an investigation. And, is biting federal law-enforcemnt officials taught in self-defense classes in East Lansing.

Sorry, MPH. Your comments about McCallie seem well-intentioned, but he's a Spartan now, and Spartans can't expect a fair trial in the courtrooms here at Arboretum.

And a question for Sparty, who wrote: " This incident happened on March 7 and was chewed up and spit out on Spartan message boards and sports talk shows for several days."

Poor choice of words there, or deliberate pun?
