But, as we approach the coming of the Beijing Olympics, and Americans will be flocking to that booming economic dreamland, it is appropriate to note that the well-oiled Chinese social machine sometimes grinds out a defective part:

SHANGHAI, China -- "A knife-wielding Chinese tour guide injured 20 people in a stabbing-and-slashing spree at a southwestern resort following an argument over kickbacks on souvenir sales, a news report said Tuesday.

"Fifteen tourists at the resort and five local residents were injured after Sunday's attack in Lijiang, a scenic mountain town in Yunnan province, the Shanghai Daily newspaper reported. At least one person remained in critical condition."
