GOOD NEWS: Vieques

You may remember the controversy over Vieques Island near Puerto Rico. The U.S. Navy used it for years as a target for naval gunners and planes. After much protest from Puerto Ricans, the Navy gave it up.

Now, according to the Audubon Society, it contains the largest wildlife sanctuary (about 18,000 acres) in the Caribbean and is haven to 148 bird species, including migratory birds. It is also a haven for many sea turtles, and the surrounding reefs have regained much vitality.

Now the island is beginning to confront problems of success. As more land and activities are opened up to public enjoyment, including a vibrant eco-tourism business, the island refuge must decide what is and what is not appropriate use of its land and waters. But, this is happier for the birds, the animals, and the 9.000 human residents than bombing.
